#11 - Reconciling

Welcome back to our little community here - it’s great to have you.
Reconciling
We’re wrapping up financial literacy month with some thoughts on the word reconciling.
I’ve mentioned in past issues that I’ve made every single financial mistake there is. One of the mistakes I repeat is avoiding reconciling my accounts in my budgeting software - You Need A Budget (a.k.a. YNAB). I avoid it because I have to come face to face with those money mistakes again as I reconcile. While I make fewer of these mistakes than I did in the past - they still happen. And so sometimes I’ll avoid YNAB for days or more at a time.
It’s silly to avoid though because the mistake is made. You can do nothing but learn from it. You can’t go back and undo it (although sometimes you can get charges reversed and return unnecessary purchases which has actually been a balm to my soul of late).
In these last few months as I’ve had time to really focus in on my life - and one its aspects - my budget, I’ve spent more time in YNAB. It’s now a daily startup task. I log in, import any transactions from my bank, make sure everything looks good, and go about my day. What I used to dread is now just a five minute part of my morning start up.
Reconciling isn’t only about bank accounts though. It’s also about relationships and other places where you may have done something that you wish you hadn’t and you need to fix that. Where do you need to make an apology or a larger amends? I can think of a few that I need to work on and so I’m going to set about doing that this week. What are you avoiding because of past mistakes and you need to reconcile that with yourself? For me, it’s diet and exercise (ALWAYS!).
What I published this week
I “kind of” missed my minimum viable ship this week with only one article and a handful of tweets plus this newsletter on my “traditional” publishing platforms. I didn’t publish a new video, but it may still get done on Sunday.
That said, I joined the blockchain to publish on a site called Hive. Hive allows you to earn crypto-currency for your posts. A couple of friends in my coworking group urged and supported this new endeavor and so the last two items linked below are actually my first items published on that platform. I’m still unsure of whether crypto is good, bad, or indifferent, but I’ve always been one to embrace new things and give them a try. I don’t think crypto is going anywhere anytime soon so I might as well get in on it and see what it’s all about.

I’m committing to getting back into visuals. I can’t draw but that doesn’t stop me from trying over and over again. So, 30 days of visuals coming up. This is also pushing me to finally learn Procreate on my iPad.

Taking a big leap and committing to doing more visuals over the next 30 days. Started reading @danroam book Blah, Blah, Blah today at the suggestion of @EvansNifty. Loving it so far. This image was inspired by the first few pages of the book. https://t.co/xKYoaYFNWd

Tech Tip
On our same theme of reconciling, I thought I’d share something I learned a couple of months ago.
If you purchase from Amazon and you attempt to reconcile your accounts against your Amazon purchases, it’s frustrating. Amazon charges for what they’ve shipped - not for what you’ve ordered. That means two orders placed on two different days could be charged three or four times across multiple days depending on when and how they ship things to you.
There is a handy spot on Amazon’s site that can help make things a little better and allow you to reconcile your purchases with their charges.
Log into your Amazon account and go to My Account. Scroll down on that screen to the boxes full of links and find “Your Payments”. When you open that link you’ll see a list of each payment you’ve made matched up against the order it was linked to.
The image below shows that “Your Payments” link circled.
Have a technology question you’d like answered? Chances are someone else wants that answer to. Hit reply and ask - I might feature it in a future newsletter. And, don’t forget, I offer one on one coaching in all manner of things - including technology and productivity. Schedule a free no-obligation coaching call to learn more.

Over the next few weeks I’m exploring a couple of other newsletter publishing platforms so my newsletter may come from a different location in the coming weeks. Never fear - your info is safe and I would never sell it to anyone. I’m just trying to find the best combination of tools that work for me at the best prices. While Revue is no charge, I would like an option with a little more flexibility now that I’ve tried the tool out. I’ll let you know before I officially moved but I also always want to be up front and transparent about any changes I’m going to make with where things like your email address might be stored.
