I voted in fire station on Tuesday, just like I did when I voted in the station where my dad was the fire chief and my mom worked the polls for years. And, note to self…work the polls next year. No reason why you shouldn’t get that done! You all can hold me accountable to that.
Trust Yourself Like I Trust You
I enjoy crime dramas. Those who know me well, may remember the three trips Gayle and I have made to the set of NCIS Los Angeles. One of my favorite pictures from those three visits…which I manifested back into my Facebook memories this week (or just got lucky with timing)
So, it should be no surprise to you that I love the CBS/Paramount show SWAT.
As I mentioned in last week’s essay, I listen to all sorts of signals about what to write in my articles, newsletters, podcasts, and videos. And yes - everything begins with writing even if I’m recording/filming it. This week’s essay is no different.
Conversations over the last two weeks had already caused me to write down “trust yourself” as the theme to this essay. And then, Hondo, the lead character on SWAT was having a conversation with his girlfriend when he said this line to her, “Trust yourself like I trust you.”
When we don’t trust our own judgment and our own decision making we allow imposter syndrome to get in the way of our success. Imposter syndrome tells you that you’re not good enough, not worthy enough, not knowledgeable enough, etc. to do whatever it is you’re trying to do. Even when you’ve done your research, discussed it with trusted partners, and made up your mind you can fall prey to allowing imposter syndrome to get in the way and make you think - and even believe - that you shouldn’t do whatever it is you’re trying to do or shouldn’t take the path that you’ve decided on.
There is no real solution to this except to remember to trust yourself like those who trust you most trust you. And, keep doing that until you trust yourself as much as everyone else trusts you.

Tools, Tips, & Tricks
Accept That Whom You Cannot Change
My friend Tracy published a beautiful essay last week that I’ve been sharing with everyone since I read it. You can read it here. The entire essay is beautiful, but these are the two lines that spoke to my soul:
Today, I have a better grasp of faith, which is nothing like religion.
And, after telling a story of a mistake she made she shares that she’s moving forward by making a living amend
A living amend is about not making the same mistake again.
And there is SO MUCH MORE in this newsletter. I can’t recommend enough that you check out Tracy’s work. Her writing always speaks to my soul.
Use Speech to Text On Your Phone
Ordinarily, I’d just pop this into the What I Published section, but I think it’s an important enough tip to share here instead.
I have been doing "moving dictation" a LOT lately. You can do this on your phone as well - regardless of whether it is Apple or Android.
An Apple, the best I can do for you is offer a link to some instructions on the iPhone User Guide.
On Android, I can give you a few more specific instructions. There are a few things you have to do the FIRST time, but after that it's very simple to use voice to text. First, on Android, how you add voice to a file is based, oddly enough, on which keyboard you use. I have tested out about 10 of them and NONE are better than the Google Keyboard. First, let's install and/or update gboard.
Go to the Google Play store and search for Gboard (or Google Keyboard if you can't remember GBoard in the future). Install or update that app if needed. When that is done go back to your home screen.
Now, we need to make sure Gboard is activated.
Find and open the settings app on your android phone (I swipe up and type settings and enter in the search bar at the top of the screen or you can swipe down from the notifications bar at the very top of the screen and click the little cog icon to open settings).
Go to General management.
Select Keyboard list and defaults.
What does it say in the default keyboard - it should say Gboard. If it does not, click Default keyboard and see if Gboard is available to you - if it is, select that and then click on the greyed out keyboard list screen behind/above that little pop out.
You can now go back to your home screen and open any app where you would normally type text. We have one more set of settings to update and then you are ready to go!
From the Google Keyboard app (and note, if your screen does NOT look like mine, then you may want to restart your phone), click the keyboard settings option.
Next, click the Voice Typing Option.
Make sure Use Voice Typing is on. It should look like this:
And you are now ready to start typing by voice. Do this by clicking the microphone button.
What I Published This Week
My experiment with daily podcasting is continuing. I haven’t figured out what the future of the podcast will be exactly, but the frequency will likely be less than daily. With some travel at the beginning of this week it felt like I spent every free minute writing, recording, and uploading podcast episodes. That said, I’m truly loving this little series I’ve put together so I hope you are enjoying it as well. Hit reply on this newsletter and let me know your thoughts.
Listen to episodes, see show notes, and more at https://anchor.fm/iwannabeme or search for I Wanna Be Me When I Grow Up Wherever You Get podcasts.
Facts of Life Book Series
As I build towards the official launch of the Facts of Life Book Course and Community on January 1, I’m continuing to publish articles about some of the many different things you might include in a Facts of Life Book. While I’m continuing to publish them on on Medium and Hive you can now see all of them on the Facts of Life Book website.
My Digital “Garden”
As a part of the Obsidian Vault Rebuild Series that I wrote on Medium and YouTube, I began using Obsidian Publish. This add on tool for Obsidian allows you to easily publish your “in progress” notes to the web. If you want to see what I’m thinking about, this is a great place to see inside my head. It’s always available at https://publish.obsidian.md/iwannabeme
This Week’s Featured Book Note
Each week, I’m featuring one book note from a book I’m currently reading. Click the image to view this week’s note as a PDF file.
All the podcasting and some prep for this week’s trip mean no book note from last week :-(
