Grow & Glow
Last week, I hosted my first Twitter Space. During the open conversation towards the end, the lovely Claire Vansell shared something from a yoga instructor - “The Glow & Grow”. This is an alliterative name for a feedback method. I love any good alliteration but I also know the value of giving clear, honest feedback - and the dark consequences that happen when a leader does not do this.
In both Dare to Lead and Atlas of the Heart, Brene Brown makes the point that “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” When we are in the position to give feedback, the reason that we give unclear - and therefore unkind - feedback is that we are trying to protect ourselves. That may seem counterintuitive but giving feedback that someone may not want to hear can lead to uncomfortable conversation. By remaining unclear in our feedback, we get to stay more comfortable.
Radical Candor author Kim Scott provides two guiding pieces of advice to make sure you are providing clear feedback:
* Care personally
* Challenge directly
But what does this mean? To care personally, you must invest time in a relationship with anyone you may be in a position to give feedback to. You must know what matters to this person - both personally and professionally. To challenge directly you must be clear and open in your feedback. For example, it is clear and kind for me to ask a colleague if she knows that she interrupted someone twice in a meeting and to discuss how I observed that behavior. It is clear and kind if I inform a colleague that the document he prepared for a briefing lacks key details or has limited evidence to support a conclusion.
The next time you have to give someone feedback, don’t focus only on the glow - make sure that you are clear and kind and give feedback to help the person grow. It is likely that you will grow as well as you develop confidence and experience for the next uncomfortable conversation. You may also find that the person is grateful to get the feedback from someone who cares about their success and thought that they were valuable and important enough to invest in.

Could you benefit from a coach?
When most people here the word “coach” it conjures up images of someone standing courtside, field side, or pool side guiding an individual or a team through a sporting event. Coaches aren’t just for athletes though. Everyone can benefit from a coach whether for improving performance on the playing field, in their career, or to maximize their personal journey in life. I’ve had the privilege of working with a couple of incredible coaches in my life. Both remain friends and supporters in my life jo

Tool or Tip
I offer links to books on Amazon in most of my newsletters. Every time I open book links on Amazon, one of my favorite browser extensions immediately searches my local library and tells me if the book is available for loan at my library. This extension has probably saved me hundreds of dollars over the years and reminds me what a wonderful resource my local library is every time I look at a book on Amazon. Diversion
My sister is a minor expert on the Bald Eagle. She has enjoyed tracking new nests identified near us in Indiana. She also spends time each morning that she watches her three year old grandson (my great nephew) checking on some of the eagle’s nests that have live cams on YouTube. You can search for things like “Live Eagle Cam” on YouTube. I’ve pasted a favorite one below that you can click on. I also enjoy “Live Bird Feeder Cam” or more specifically “Live Hummingbird Feeder Cam” in case eagles are not your thing.
