84 - Find The Right Tool for the Job
Find the Right Tool for the Job
TL;DR:
Something that works for someone else may not work for you.
Even when you have the right tool for you, sometimes you need help to get started using it effectively
I’ve been thinking about selecting tools a lot this week. I’m working on client projects and Gayle and I were doing home projects - all of which require some sort of tool - both physical and electronic. Sometimes, the tool choice is easy such as hanging art on the wall. At other times, the tool choice is more complicated such as trying to get an outdoor hose disconnected from the spigot when it is STUCK!
One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that what works for one person may not work for another. I was working on a couple of mending projects this weekend and pulled out an old cigar box that was my grandma’s. It has a mixture of some of her sewing supplies as well as some of mine in it. Her little needle threader is in there. For some reason, that simple little tool has just never worked well for me. While it might take me longer, I will eventually get the thread into the eye of the needle simply by wetting it in my mouth and putting it through the eye. Adding the needle threader has always overcomplicated things for me. So, just because something works well for someone else doesn’t mean it will work well for you. Sometimes you have to adapt multiple times before you find the thing that works well for you.
Even when you have the perfect tool, you still also may need some help using it. I’m watching a lot of my friends in Creative Work Hour do National Podcast Posting Month or NaPodPoMo. The goal is to post 30 episodes of a podcast in November. (Even if you do them all on November 30, you’ve still met the challenge requirements.). With everything going on in my life right now, I decided not to try this again this year. However, I still enjoy hopping on with the Creative Work Hour crew an hour before our designated start time and helping out those who have found their podcast app, gotten their recording made, and just need to get it broadcast - or all the other steps in between. We all need a little help from time to time and I’m always excited to learn something new in these sessions as well.
So, what tool do you need a little help with to get you to the next step in a project? Who could you ask for help? What tool seems to work for others but just doesn’t work at all for you? Hit reply or post in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.

Get cash back at the pump
I’ve been using Upside for well over a year now to get cash back at the pump at occasionally at restaurants and on groceries. With upside, you can also see where gas is cheapest which, especially right now, is handy. To get started using Upside, download the app (links below) and sign up for an account. If you’re so inclined, you can enter my referral code: KARA3995. Then, join me in getting cash back. I’ve earned about $50 in six months through nothing more than a check in when I get gas. I don’t drive much anymore though so I know folks who have earned much more since they fill up their tank far more often than I do.
