Get going to get motivated
TL;DR:
The only way to get motivated is to get started.
Divide big projects up into smaller chunks. Start with one thing you know you can be successful with.
Building on last week’s theme around procrastination, I continue to search for more information on overcoming procrastination and getting things done. One of the most surprising things I’ve learned from researching neuroscience and motivation is that motivation comes AFTER action, not before.
In my head, I often think I need to get motivated so I’ll do things. But, neuroscience says that’s backwards. Our brains get motivated after a hit of dopamine from having a success. So, if you want to get motivated, get active at something you know you can be successful at.
This last week has been interesting for me. My first chemo treatment was last Wednesday so each day is a new adventure in “what weird things are happening in my body.” So far, all has been pretty okay. The biggest obstacle so far is fatigue. I find that after a period of rest I have to set myself up for success by choosing a task I know I have a high likelihood of doing successfully. That will then put me on a path of activity for an hour or so before another rest break.
So, if you want to get motivated, do something you know you can be successful at.

Get cash back at the pump
I’ve been using Upside for well over a year now to get cash back at the pump at occasionally at restaurants and on groceries. With upside, you can also see where gas is cheapest which, especially right now, is handy. To get started using Upside, download the app (links below) and sign up for an account. If you’re so inclined, you can enter my referral code: KARA3995. Then, join me in getting cash back. I’ve earned about $50 in six months through nothing more than a check in when I get gas. I don’t drive much anymore though so I know folks who have earned much more since they fill up their tank far more often than I do.
Get started today by downloading the app and signing up. Don’t forget - referral code KARA3995: Apple or Android
