Sort of Weekly Web Roundup
Lindsay playing with her pig toy from an Angry Birds set...or as her Aunt G likes to call it...Pig Time. From my Instagram feed.
I've had this idea sitting in my head for a few months...at the end of each week (or around that time), post a roundup of the things I produced and placed on the web in other places (like the photo of Lindsay above from my Instagram feed), as well as the things on the Internet that I thought were especially interesting this week. So, without further ado...here goes my first attempt at the this-might-turn-into-a-weekly-feature Weekly Web Roundup.
I love the simplicity of photo sharing on Instagram. I also love the ability to see the world through the photos of others on a real time basis. It's one of my favorite apps to browse while waiting in line.
My gardening experiment this summer kept me in fresh tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, basil, mint, rosemary, parsley, thyme, and sage all summer long - and it was wonderful. Assuming my travel schedule is pretty light next summer (as it was this summer), I will definitely be repeating this experiment. I'm really happy I kept my little garden alive and thriving through what has been one of the driest summers on record.
FlickrI post the best (and sometimes worst) of my Flickr feed here. There are a lot of great friends, groups, and discussions on Flickr so from time to time I may share a few of those with you.
I love trains. I think this picture by Jane is outstanding. I love the thick black smoke against the completely clear sky.
Diana has been working on Night Photography. I think this shot is GORGEOUS!
Blogs
When you write a blog, you naturally want to read other blogs. While I may not write regularly, I do read other people's posts very regularly - it's my favorite daily activity and how I start most days. From my favorite sites this past week:
Deb at Learning As I Go - I loved this post by Deb on the rhythm of the seasons - http://www.deborahtisch.com/2012/08/stages.html
Lifehacker - Enable two-factor authentication NOW if you use any of these services - http://lifehacker.com/5938565/heres-everywhere-you-should-enable-two+factor-authentication-right-now
Young House Love - How do you know what to blog about - http://www.younghouselove.com/2012/08/how-do-you-decidew-what-to-post-about/
Also on Young House Love - I don't have kids, but I found this post on how they acquire kids clothes interesting from the perspective that they've taken the time to find a formula/process that works for them and in the end it makes life more efficient. Anything you do a lot of...do efficiently - http://www.younghouselove.com/2012/08/kid-clothes/
I Heart Faces - I though this was a great tutorial on how to brighten up faces in portraits...I thought it was so good I created a Lightroom preset for it which you can download here...just add a little skin smoothing - http://www.iheartfaces.com/2012/08/how-to-get-clean-bright-photoshop-edit/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Iheartfaces+%28I+Heart+Faces+-+Photo+Challenges+%26+Photography+Tips%29
Disney Photography Blog - If you've heard of the Sunny 16 rule, you might find the other similar rules here helpful if you're trying to go manual (which I'm trying to do and failing miserably) - http://www.disneyphotographyblog.com/the-sunny-16-rule/
YouTube
This week on YouTube, I watched these videos and would recommend them to anyone.
TumblrI share a quote a day over on my Tumblr site. I have about fifty quotes queued up at any given moment so I never know what quote will show up on what day. I always find it interesting when the quote that pops up next on the daily list (which may be one I entered weeks or even months ago) is so in line with where I'm thinking at the time. A few faves from this week:
"To be a photographer, one must photograph. No amount of book learning, no checklist of seminars attended, can substitute for the simple act of making pictures. Experience is the best teacher of all. And for that, there is no guarantee that one will become an artist. Only the journey matters." - Harry Callahan.
"Habit simplifies our movements, makes them accurate, and diminishes fatigue." - William James
"We've bought into the idea that education is about training and "success", defined monetarily, rather than learning to think critically and to challenge. We should not forget that the true purpose of education is to make minds, not careers. A culture that does not grasp the vital interplay between morality and power, which mistakes management techniques for wisdom, which fails to understand that the measure of a civilization is its compassion, not its speed or ability to consume, condemns itself to death." - Chris Hedges
TwitterI become a little twitter-obsessed (shall we say twitter-pated) during the Olympics and I can't seem to step away. Most of what I post to twitter is actually just stuff I post other places (quotes from tumblr, photos from instagram, etc), but these tweets from others made me smile, think, or just otherwise, stop and go "huh!?" this past week.
Speaking of the Olympics - the ParaOlympics torch relay has begun. Follow it at #ParaTorch
Pauley Perrette (Abby from NCIS) talks about one of the things she's doing for her Rescue Dog...and it's nothing short of pure love (#RescueDog and #IloveMyDog)
As our own political race heats up in the US...a perspective from down under on why bloggers matter to the modern day political process.
PinterestI LOVE Pinterest! And they have an Android App now - YEAH!!!. A few of my favorite pins from this past week.
